175 tire sizes/sources (or tyre for those other guys)
(1/1)
TangoZulu:
I was wondering if anyone has experimented with larger tire sizes for the 175 DT/HS. Maybe a 2.75/18 on the front and 3.00/18 rear? Why? Ummm, better traction, looks cooler? Just curious. Also, where are people sourcing tires here in the US. I see Heidenau makes the correct sizes (2.50/18F — 2.75/18R) in a "racing" tire. Dime City Cycles sells them for a premium. Other brands/sources? Mostly because it looks cooler; you can actually go to 3.00 front/3.50 back, but they look overly massive and the sidestand is almost too short. The bike leans so far it looks like it might fall over. The 2.75/3.00 sets look good. Check around or the Heidenau's, I bought 2.50 & 2.75's for approx $75/each from Cycle Outfitters (local Indianapolis area shops). Incidentally, although those are original sizes for the 175DT, they look really tiny. Do a search on this site, there are more than one thread on 175 and 350 tires that may give you some ideas.

So I decided to go with the 2.75 front and 3.00 rear based on your input. Found a screamin' deal on some Avon Streetrunner tires from J&P cycles, postage paid. Whenever I get around to mounting and trying them out, I'll give a report.

Recently fitted a pair of standard size Avon Roadrunners to my GTO to give her some modern rubber.
A few observations :-
A good tough tire that should have a long service life.
Carcass is a lot stiffer than BS originals and they take some levering on to the rims, used tyre soap to assist.
They are wider than original tyres and front one fouls the guard mounting bolts when refitting wheel. Had to remove guard and refit after.
Riding two up I thought I bottomed the rear suspension on a dip in the road. Later, found the rear tyre had just caught the rear guard forward indent behind the chainguard. It put a small groove in the side of the tread, bent the indent out slightly to clear tyre.
The tyres are significantly heavier than the originals and may have a small effect on the bike handling.
A few items to be aware of but may be different with Streetrunners on a 175, Brian
