Steering Dampener lower nut?
« on: January 03, 2017, 11:30:44 PM »
I stole this photo from Ebay.
I have the rectangle shaped nut but it appears the washer that creates the tension is not on my nut.  So I only have the rectangle and it pulls through the dampener parts.

Does anybody have this piece (circled in red) they can sell me?  I'm located in the Los Angeles area of southern california.
it is part number 4321-8000

this is the part that I was chasing for a long time ,there have been a lot on ebay but all of them seem to be corroded  in place and the damper rod is snapped off inside the nut

I don't want to have to buy $30-50 worth of parts on ebay just to get that nut.
I think I am going to have a welder weld a washer onto what is left of my rectangle nut and that should suffice.

It's the thread that usually strips on these due to corrosion when you try to undo a seized damper.  (heating first with a gas torch is the answer ).
I have repaired one by counter drilling the bottom and pressing in a brass, football inflator,  adapter. One with serrated edge and then tapped  to 6mm.  Now better than the original.
Could you make up a brass adaptor that would press in and trap  a standard steel washer against the bottom of the nut.    Maybe worth a try ?.                        Brian

I happen to be close friends with a machinist.  We started a BMW motorcycle parts company together but I handed over my share of the company for personal reasons.

We originally tried to weld a washer to what was left of the Bridgestone rectangle shaped nut and it blew a hole into the side of the nut.

He makes a really nice Damper knob for BMW's... so  He and I got to work in his shop and with a lathe or two, we came up with these parts.

They are getting mounted on the bike today.   Much better then the plastic knob in my opinion... and the lower nut is MUCH better then stock.
