top speed?
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:07:51 PM »
Was out riding my 175 the other day and I made a wrong turn onto the highway instead of the frontage road. I had to get up to speed or I felt like I was going to get run over. I maxed out at 55 full throttle and going with the wind. I know I shifted into 5th but I couldn't get anywhere near the 85mph the manuals say. Has anyone had issues with 5th gear not having any power?

I don't think it's a problem with 5th gear - more likely the engine is well down on power. My Dual Twin will pull to 65mph in 4th gear, and gets well on the other side of 70mph in top with 300lb of me sitting upright. The Dual Twin is high geared, but it shouildn't effect the speed that much.

See if your bike will easily reach 60 in 4th. If it won't, the motor is sick - maybe it needs a thoruogh tune-up (particularly plugs, points and ignition timing). If it has good speed in 4th but won't pull in top, maybe you have a binding brake, or a soft tyre.

This bothers me because I just finished getting this thing tuned up so well. I would hope something isn't bound up somewhere in the driveline.i know I have 110 compression new plugs new points new coils and new rectifying bridge. Everything works fine. The only thing I can think is I need to play with the carbs again. Any suggestions guys. I do want to ride this on a bike run later this month but if I can't get highway speeds there's no point in trying to keep up with them.

Check that both carbs are fully open when the throttle is open, that the air cleaner housing isn't plugged with a mouse nest and the exhausts aren't plugged, either with carbon in the baffles or a mouse nest. What did you do to fix the muffler that the lady ran over and flattened?

The flattened muffler was a low dual twin. I acquired a much needed left side hurricane pipe from Gene so I'm now back to stock look without the stingers. I've been thinking I should check the carbs. That's where most of this bikes problems have been.
