Bad oil leak
« on: September 06, 2017, 12:38:58 PM »
Hi guys.  I'm getting a bad oil leak from the right side of my 359 GTR.  What could cause this to happen?  I can still run it if I keep replacing the oil that is lost.  Is this a major problem?  Thanks for any info.  Harry :)

Harry - where exactly is the oil coming out of the motor? Bottom or side cover?

It's pretty straightforward. The banjo can leak either from the fiber gaskets (one above, one below the banjo) or from the banjo itself. The aluminum banjos on the oil tank and the oil pump can crack over the years.  Of course the rubber hose itself could be cracked or split where it attaches to the banjo.  I noticed a couple days ago mine is leaking a little bit from the banjo area also.

There is a screen attached to the banjo bolt that you have to deal with when you remove the bolt, so be prepared so you don't damage the screen taking it apart.

it also can leak if the mounting bolt for the oil tank has been over tightened and the tank itself is cracked around the bolt

Coxy's right, and it will run down the back and drip off the banjo bolt, making it look like the banjo is leaking.

I know this is going a bit off topic, but to solve my oil tank leaking banjo, I got rid of the old crusty fibre washers and used bonded seals. These are made for hydraulic fittings, so Lucky I work for a hydraulic company  ;D

Thanks again to all of you.  I'm sending the bike to the guy in Trevose, Pa this winter and let him try some of your suggestions.  He is also rebuilding my front forks.  Harry

The guy in Trevose is Steve Bromley. His business phone is 215-357-1534.  The business name is Bromley Motorcycle Sales Inc. at 635 Somers Ave., Trevose, Pa. 19053.  He also has some nos parts for Bridgestone bikes.  Hope this helps.
