BS50 KickStart Shaft Replacement
« on: March 07, 2017, 08:35:41 PM »
All, I need to replace the kickstart shaft on my 1965 BS50. I have downloaded the repair manual, and I am unclear whether or not the cases need to be split to replace the shaft. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks, Bob

Unfortunately, you will need to split the cases to replace the shaft. There are clips on the inside that keep the shaft in place and there is no way to reach them from the outside.

Dan,
Thanks for the reply. I have ordered the shaft. My BS50 is a nice, unrestored runner, and deserves to be fixed.

Bob,

When you have the time please post a few pictures of your 50.

Thank you.

I restored one some time ago and it ran great. I was pleasantly surprised at the "giddy-up" it had. They guy I rescued it from told me it was "nothing more than a moped". Well, it was much more than a moped, I assure you.

I found a 350 GTR nearby that was for sale and my wife told me I had to part ways with a few bikes before I was allowed to have any more. Unfortunately, the 50 had to go.

The kick start shaft itself is a pretty straight forward swap out, but there is a lot of disassembly required to get to that point.

Bob,

I am about to go through this same repair but I'm letting a shop do the work.  Where did you go for parts?  Maybe we could talk offline in the event that I need some guidance.

Thanks,
Adam
