Preferred method for installing new seals
« on: November 30, 2016, 10:35:35 AM »
Is there a "best method" for the installation of new oil seals in the motor?

Say you split the cases and replace all the seals. Do you install the seals on the respective shaft and then bolt the cases together with the seal in place, or do you assemble the motor and then drive the seals in place after bolting up the halves?

Place the seals in position before bolting the cases together.

Sye - thats how I always have done it but recently replaced 1 seal so I didn't bother splitting the cases and it made me wonder if that was a better or more efficient method.

I would've guessed putting them in after would be the way to go... but what do I know?  ;D

If only a seal needs replaced, there's no need to split the cases just for that.  If you have the cases split, I find it's somewhat easier to put the seals in place before assembling the case halves.  In both cases, be sure the seal is straight when you finish, and adjust if needed.

It can be six of this, half dozen of the other.

If cases are split I put them on the shaft as there is less chance of rolling the lip. But with a bit of careful fitting, it can be done either way. Sometimes for the larger seals, you can you a think cable tie to ease the lip over, just use plenty of lubrication. Lubrication is your friend.  ;)

I got the impression for your OP that the cases are already apart?

If the cases are already split then installing them at that time is easier and less likely to cause any damage. If the cases are closed, then driving them in (gently) with the proper tool is the way to go.

I have no current motor projects - was just asking for the opinions of others.
