UPDATE: I took apart the right side of the engine having the timing gears exposed...found the problem ( thanks so much Brian for the explanation and photos on valve timing!!!! ) Timing was out of whack due to my negligence of details when first assembling the engine, turns out i had NOT matched the timing marks on the crankshaft end along with the timing mark on the gear itself ( had the markings 5 cogs off!!!  :-[ )  The rotary valve is correct the way i had it, but the timing of the markings on the crank end and gear threw the timing way off. Am in the process of putting it back together , and will try to finish tomorrow and should be good news which i will post what happens this time around. Once again i cannot forget to include Ziggy for the fine photo that he sent to me, ever so clearly the timing marks on the gears... Thanks to you Ziggy and greatly appreciate the help from everyone that helped me out on this one!!!  :) :) :) :) :) bsforever

The really good news is that rotary valves can't interfere with pistons when the timing is off (a la overhead valve 4 strokes). 2 strokes can be finicky and not run worth a hoot, but no catastrophic damage. Congrats on the successful debug. ;D

Update(2) Got things put back together today, started the engine up and engine runs in the right direction this time... :) still has a nasty missing problem on the right side yet, but will have to investigate on that to get it going good. I was able to finally 'take it for a ride' for a short spell....felt good even with the missing problem on the right side cylinder.  :) :) :) :) :) bsforever

Very good to hear. See the value in this site and the free information available to all members?? None if happens without RC.

I am enamored with the idea of a motorcycle that runs backwards.

Good to hear she's now running the right way and thanks for the feedback (not everyone tells us when they sort the problem), pleased we could help.
If it's a definite 'misfire' I'd check the electrics first, connections tight, no stray wire strands particularly at the points, duff coil or condenser, HT lead, plug cap and plug ? ?

I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

I'm happy it's sorted! Get out and enjoy!

When I receive my GTRit only ran in one cylinder ( verified with temp gun), turned out for me one of the mufflers was blocked with leaves!
