Bridgestone 175 timing problems
« on: October 26, 2013, 01:09:19 AM »
Hello everyone. I am a new member and I am excited to be a part of your community. I have owned 2 Bridgestone's so far. One was a 175 Dual Twin that I have since sold and, my current project, a late model 175 Hurricane Scrambler. I would very much appreciate the help of this community to solve a timing problem I am having. I am trying to follow the instructions in the service manual and I have all of the tools (timing bolt and bar, and a self powered continuity tester). The problem I am having is that the timing light stays on all of the time when I have it connected. For the right cylinder timing I have the key in the off position, the alligator clip on the right condenser wire at the condenser and the point of the tester to a good bare metal ground on the engine... and the light is on ALWAYS as I turn the engine over. Has anyone had this problem before. I timed the last BS 175 I owned without a problem. Any help is appreciated.

Either the points or a wire is shorted or the points aren't making good contact, depending on the configuration of your continuity test setup.  Points can close, but have too much resistance to conduct any significant current, or a wire can be broken or unplugged under the tank, any of which will give you an open circuit.  Points can have the screw that connects the wire misassembled and shorted, wires can be frayed and shorted, etc., all giving you a constantly closed circuit.  That doesn't count possible, but unlikely, condenser problems.

I appreciate the information. I will search the wiring harness for any possible causes. Since the test light is on all the time I must be dealing with a constantly closed circuit. Off comes the tank and the seat... for the fourth time. I also wanted to mention that the engine backfires so violently that it kills itself, which makes me think there is a serious timing issue, or perhaps that is the result of a short. It ran well a short while ago so I am very discouraged.

Hang in there. Unless you adjusted the timing or the screw for holding the points is loose, it's probably not the timing - just not necessarily obvious.
