New Chain fitment seems incorrect
« on: October 10, 2016, 11:33:59 AM »
OK... keep in mind that I only have built driveshaft driven motorcycles.
I bought a new 428 chain for my 175HS and it fits the sprocket at the wheel just fine but does not seem to fit the transmission sprocket correctly.
I have replaced that transmission sprocket but it does not fit the old, or new sprocket.
The only thing that fits is the old chain.
Please see the photos... and any advice is appreciated.

It's difficult to tell from the photos, but the new sprocket looks like it may have slightly longer pitch than normal, but that doesn't explain why the new chain doesn't fit the old sprocket  The chain seems a little odd, but visually it's hard to say why.  A 428 chain should have 1/2 " pitch, .335 diameter rollers and .205 inside width. You might also try laying one sprocket on top of the other to see if the teeth match up.

I'm at work looking at the photos and I have a feeling I was sold the wrong chain size without looking at the box. I asked the guy for a 428 chain and it is a 420.
I think that could be my problem....and I will check as soon as i get home.

The new chain has 420 stamped on it not 428? It's the wrong size.

yep!  I guess I'm a bonehead for not double checking what the guy sold me...
I was really starting to worry that I have some odd custom gearing or something.
Too bad I already popped a few links out otherwise i would return it.  Dang.  time to buy another.
