Krylon Paint
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:53:06 PM »
I am trying to recover a seat for one of the GTRs with the Pit Replica seat cover, and since I had the old seat cover removed I thought it would be a good time to repaint the seat pan. I picked up a high dollar can of Krylon Gloss Black, silly me, I thought it would be best to use a quality paint instead of the $1.99 stuff I usually get at Wally World. The Krylon paint said it would be dry to the touch in 1/2 hour and fully cured in 2 hours. Apply a second coat within the original 2 hours or if you miss that wait 48 hours for a second coat.

I painted the pan over 10 hours ago and it still isn't dry. If you touch it you leave a finger print. It is sitting in an air conditioned garage with low humidity. One coat. If I would have used the $1.99 paint it would have been completely dry in 15 minutes.

I'm probably going to have to strip the seat pan now. This paint is crap. I am p*%$##@*   >:(

High temps help paint curing enormously.
Shouldn't be a problem right now in the mid section and the midwest of the US.
Crack the door and see what happens.
Seems you don't have anything to lose at this point.

Steve

Steve's right, the cool temp in A/C is hurting the drying, although it sounds as if something may be wrong with the paint.  Low/high humidity won't affect spray paint much as the solvent that is evaporating isn't water. Humidity will only affect latex paint significantly. The best bet for a faster cure is to lay it out in the direct sun.  On these 90 deg. days, that'll dry it out pretty fast.  Just pick it up with gloves, it's going to be HOT!

Sounds to me like you have a paint problem. Don't know what would cause it because any Krylon I've used in the past has dried right away. That includes painting the kid's pinewood derby cars in a cold garage in January at way below the recommended temps on the label.  I am a fan of their spray can products.

Well, it has been a day and a half and it is better but still a touch soft and tacky.

I'll put that sucker out on the back deck tomorrow, it got to 100 degrees F here today, I can just imagine what a black seat pan sitting in the direct sunlight will get to, probably 150.

Sorry about the rant, I don't have a lot of spare time these days and I was really looking forward to doing that seat cover yesterday.

I am making some progress on the bike in my quest to get it roadworthy. I got a very nice throttle cable from Richard and will get that on sometime this week. I have some Dunlop K70's coming so it will have some new hoops pretty soon. Things are moving  ;D.
