1969 100 tmx won't start
« on: September 11, 2011, 02:06:55 PM »
My 100 tmx used to start right up after not running for 40 years i cleaned the jets and the carb mixed the fuel properly and now it will only push start. kick start is not stripped at least the engine turns when you kick it. I need someones help who knows more about these. Thanks!

Maybe try re-timing it? Rule of thumb at our shop if it won't kick easily then there's more than likely a timing issue. When kick starting old harleys we better be sure it's timed right or you'll be hurtin!

I assume you've tried a new spark plug - but perhaps a new set of points would be anidea. That's the usual problem with strokers that won't start after standing for a while.

Mikefink,
I would replace the points and the condenser, when you pull the flywheel to replace the points etc clean out the inside of the flywheel.
Then check the magnets inside the flywheel test the wiring to the coil replace spark plug.
Homework for the weekend only joking!
Thanks.
Steve.

Check the point gap, if it is to wide you will not get any spark, I had 2 or 3 bridgestones where the point gap was to wide.

This Saturday my tmx100 just quit, I cleaned the points and carb and re gapped points and still no spark. It turns out there was some little metal flakes grounding out the points to the coil windings for the magneto. I would check that also...
