350 Running rich ? - Check your choke plungers.

             My GTO was coughing, spluttering and snatching on light load, was almost unrideable. Despite having correct float levels, 25 pilots, 130 mains and needle clips second from top she still seemed to be running rich.  I was sure the choke plungers were seating but they were the only source of overfueling left.
           Pulled them out, prised out the tip rubbers (rock hard but NOS carbs) with a sharp point and needlenose pliers. Original rubber disc diameter was probably 7mm but only had a quarter inch punch. So stamped a couple of 2mm thick viton rubber (Ebay) discs. Put these in at an angle and used a small blunt screwdiver to press the sides in and down into the recess, working round the tip.  Refitted to carbs and made sure there was a bit of slack in the choke cable at the lever end.
         What a difference, she now runs smoothly at low revs and is pleasant to ride. So that's another issue cured, still vibrating at higher revs but will sort that in due course.

Brian,

I've followed the thread on this subject on Yahoo Bridgestone and thought it was so useful that I printed it out and filed it with other jewels of information like this.  I'm in the process of gathering parts for a BS50 restoration as well as a 350 resto-mod I'm going to do in cafe racer style.  I do have a NOS set of carbs for the 350 project but I'm probably going to check the plungers on them.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard of carb problems with 350's that were only fixed by changing to different carbs.  There could be a whole lot of used carbs still in use with this fix!
