Bs350 Gtr tank leak from usual place...
« on: August 05, 2015, 05:37:25 AM »
Just when I thought I had all the bugs sorted the fuel tank has decided to leak from where the bung is crimped in :-X

I have tried to tig weld it up but the tank keeps cracking.  Has anyone tried any other methods to seal the tank, bearing in mind that the tank needs to be able to be chromed afterwards.

Or is my tank terminal?

Anyone got a spare tank ;)

Try removing all the chrome from the area you need to repair before welding.  I also had trouble with cracking after welding.  I think it may be caused by the chrome and/or copper underplating alloying with the steel causing a very brittle alloy.

I eventually fixed my tank by trimming out the cracked area, sanding off all the chrome, welding in a patch cut from a piece of mild steel, then sanding it down to match the outer surface.

I soldered two of mine then finished it off neatly, you can chrome over solder.

My tank is at a local old school panel beaters shop. He believes with some brazing it should hold fuel and be fine to chrome over. While it's there he's going to pull out a dent...

With a bit of luck I might actually get to ride further than my street this weekend.....

Should you be interested, there's someone on the Atlanta Craigslist site with a tank for sale.

Ryan,
Is your guy going to braze on top of the chrome or grind it off first. I've got the same issue.     Brian.
Unspoiled by progress.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

Your tanks not terminal and I do have tanks. But:

To have a nice tank you will have to re-chrome anyways, so strip the whole thing before welding. I would think the low cost method would be to remove chrome around the cracking and have it professionally welded (if you're no better welder them I am). You could paint the complete tank which there are nice examples on Richard's rebuild site area.

I took a real sow's ear tank and made a silk purse out of it by stripping, splitting the tank halves (grind off no more metal than necessary), de-denting for the inside, wire brushing inside surface thoroughly, added 1/8 npt cross over ports, rewelded, and leak checked. A beautiful chorme tank is waiting for paint.

With the success of this process I plan to do more tanks.

By the way Ziggy, I believe to chrome over solder you must have a copper layer between it and the chrome. Not all chrome shops use copper.

I agree Davis regarding chroming over solder, copper plate first. I've used a few chromers in the past and that seemed to be common practice, I personally wouldn't use one that didn't offer the full treatment.

Sorry guys, I forgot to reply to this thread.

My panel beater was unable to braze the tank because as it cooled it cracked like it did when it was TIG welded. He ended up building the area up with hard solder.

It doesn't look the prettiest, but as he explained to me, the area needed a bit extra support and the area will be painted so can be built up with "bog" to look right.

I'm just happy I am now able to ride it...still working bugs out in the clutch and front brake...lol????
