jan.7,2017 SR-100 made noise
« on: January 07, 2017, 08:46:22 PM »
Hi All,
Got my little racer started today. Sounds great but only would run for a little while. It was only about 2 degrees outside setting in the snow so it was real lean. I could keep it running a little by choking it with my hand but that made it impossible to test ride, HaHa. I may need a little more jet not sure, no choke and ultra low temperature kinda leans things out. Good thing is nothing ran out of it or broke. I have a few short videos but have not been able to load them on the site. Was great to hear the sound for the first time ever. Will eventually get something posted and maybe video a ride around the yard. Wish me luck.

Mike you should merge all this into 1 thread so it's easier to follow your progress.

Can't wait to see the video.

Will have to figure out how to load video's onto u-tube or something so I can post on site. I cannot even send them thru e-mail to anyone, says not enough memory to complete. Not going to try running the bike until it warms up outside. Without a choke system it makes things real lean quickly. Bring spring early.

Mike ,  Could you have a blocked jet in the bottom of the float bowl ? Not even sure if that size carb has one.             Brian

Will check but I don't think there is a jet. Most likely is just due to being extremely cold and no choke circuit. Talked to Richard and he said they always need to be warmed up before they will run properly, even spraying ether in air intake. Waiting for some warmer weather to try again.
Thanks Mike

Thanks Rowland,
For all the members who have wanted to hear an SR-100 run the link Rowland posted will let you hear mine running. Hopefully in the near future when it warms up enough I will be able to get it running by itself without me choking it. Then I can take a short ride around the yard and will post that video. Want to test gearbox and clutch.

Thanks Randy,
Not sure how to put the you tube on site. Rowland did that for me, I just put the video on you tube and he posted it. Thanks to Rowland. Hopefully it will warm up enough soon so I can get it to run on its own. Want to take a short spin around the yard to test gearbox and clutch. Never thought about them not running cold due to lack of a choke system. Wish me luck.

Once you have the carburetor cover on the engine, the trick is to lean the bike almost flat on the left side for several seconds so that the carburetor spills fuel down the throat into the crankcase. This was usually enough to keep one running until it warmed up a bit.  That's probably not enough in cold weather, though. You'll need to keep choking it with your hand for a few minutes.

I got tired of having a problem starting my 175 racer with the factory 22mm carbs without chokes, so I finally bought a set of Kawasaki A7 carbs.  Same thing, except they had the machining for the enricheners, so I put a choke cable and lever on it.

Thanks for the advice Karl, makes perfect sense. I will wait until it warms up a little more and give it a try. Just want to get it warmed up and take one short ride around yard. Then I will hang it on the beam above my race car for display only.

Or maybe one evening at the short track at the Marion County Fairgrounds next summer?   ;D

Second one is starting to go together, rear wheel and swing arm mounted today. Will post progress on it as it goes. Need to get a few correct bolts to keep moving. Waiting for a little nicer weather to try mine running again.
